Essiac original herbal formula features a blend of four herbs formulated by nurse Rene Caisse
Inspired by a patient who successfully supported her health with herbs recommended to her by a Native American medicine man, Canadian nurse Rene Caisse decided to "bottle" the formula so she could help others.
From the 1920s to the 1970s, Essiac ("Caisse" spelled backwards) was promoted throughout Canada as an immune support tonic.** Caisse was encouraged by physicians to set up her own clinic in Toronto, where she dispensed her tonic and advised patients from 1934 to 1942.
Today, Essiac is available in three easy-to-take forms: liquid extract, herbal tea and supplement capsules. The original formula features a proprietary blend of the following herbs—all grown without the use of pesticides or herbicides:
- Burdock: an herb whose roots have been used in traditional medicine to support elimination and blood health
- Sheep sorrel: used traditionally for a variety of health purposes, including cellular and digestive health
- Slippery elm bark: known for its soothing effects due to mucilage (slippery, gel-like substance) content
- Indian rhubarb: the root of this plant has been used to promote cellular health
For nearly a century, people have used Essiac original formula, developed by a nurse and based on Native American traditional medicine.
