Green Tea Research
|
Some studies suggest drinking one cup of green tea a day supports good health, while others suggest drinking five cups of green tea a day will achieve the same result. Studies are mixed over green tea, as are green tea research findings. The exact mechanism in green tea that promotes health benefits is relatively unknown, but researchers suggest it may be related to the high levels of polyphenols-natural antioxidants-in green tea.
- A research team from Tohoku University in Sendai, Japan found that adults who drank at least five cups of green tea daily demonstrated a lower cardiovascular risk than those who drank less than one cup of green tea a day, and deaths from cardiovascular disease were 26 percent lower for green tea drinkers than for those who didn't consume green tea1.
- Chinese studies indicate that men who drink at least one cup of green tea a day for six months have a reduced risk of free radicals developing in the colon, rectum, and pancreas. A Chinese study found that the risk of developing such a cancer was reduced by 60 percent in people who drank two to three cups of green tea a day.
- A general Japanese study into green tea and cancer found that men and women who drink up to 10 cups of green tea a day may run a lower risk of developing free radicals2.
Green Tea and the FDA
In spring 2005, the FDA (Food and Drug Administration) refused a petition from green tea companies requesting permission to put health claims on their products saying, "There is no credible evidence to support qualified health claims for green tea or green tea extract..."3.
