"How can I really be sure this or a similar product "works?" I mean, there's no way to know how my gums would be without it, so I can't be sure it's really doing any good.

But after using it for years, my gums are in good condition and have actually shown improvement (less deep "pockets", no bleeding, etc.)

I just have a "gut feeling" that it's effective. Plus, the ingredients, especially the Prickly Ash Bark, are known for their beneficial effect on teeth and gums, as are several other ingredients. I wish it didn't have alcohol, but that, too, is a known antiseptic.

By the way, this formula is based on an old Edgar Cayce recipe."
