Glucosinolates are transformed into indole-3-carbinol (I3C) and diindolylmethane (DIM) in the body. I3C promotes formation of a beneficial estrogen (2-hydroxyestrone), supporting the health of estrogen-sensitive tissues such as those of the breast and cervix. It also acts as an antioxidant, working to neutralize cell-damaging free radicals, protecting immune and overall-body health.
DIM, which is the active metabolite of I3C, works to convert active estrogens into inactive estrogen metabolites. It also frees up testosterone bound to sex hormone binding globulins, promoting increased free-circulating testosterone in the bloodstream. Higher levels of testosterone are associated with a number of health benefits, including enhanced cardiovascular function, improved mood and increased fat-burning capability. Like I3C, DIM also functions as an antioxidant.
