How Does NSI® Licorice Root Work?
Licorice root, derived from the stems and underground roots of the Glycyrrhiza glabra plant, is considered one of the most important herbs in traditional Chinese medicine. Valued as a demulcent (soothing, coating agent) and expectorant (helps rid phlegm and mucous), licorice root has been used for centuries to promote digestive and respiratory health.

The active constituents in licorice root include glycyrrhizin, a compound that may help stimulate the production of mucous in the respiratory tract, potentially making it less “sticky” and easier to expel from the body. Glycyrrhizin may also inhibit the activity of two enzymes that break down prostaglandin E (PGE). PGE circulating in the body may encourage the production of stomach mucous, which can help protect the stomach’s lining. Glycyrrhizin also supports the body’s natural anti-inflammatory response (by helping to inhibit the breakdown of cortisol), promoting joint, skin, liver and lung health.

Licorice root contains potent polyphenolic flavonoids (antioxidants) that work to protect healthy cells from damage caused by free radicals. They may help protect low-density lipoprotein (LDL) in arterial walls from oxidative stress, promoting cholesterol and cardiovascular health. One of the most abundant antioxidants found in licorice root, the flavonoid glabradin, is well known for its protective effects on LDL oxidation and its beneficial effects on skin.

Licorice root also contains phytoestrogens, or plant estrogens, which may function like a mild form of estrogen in the body, offering relief from hot flashes, poor mood and other discomforts associated with menopause and women’s monthly cycles.
