How Does NSI® Manganese work?
Manganese is a naturally occurring trace mineral that’s required by the body for several important functions. Necessary for the growth and maintenance of healthy bones, manganese also plays a part in the body’s metabolism process and functions as a cell-protective antioxidant.

Manganese acts as a cofactor for enzymes called glycosyltransferases, which help produce proteoglycans, the main structural components of cartilage. It’s essential for proper bone and cartilage formation and is also involved in the health and maintenance of ligaments, intervertebral discs and tendons. Manganese may help with the maintenance of normal bone mineral density in postmenopausal women.

Manganese also functions as a cofactor for many enzymes involved in the metabolism of carbohydrates, fats and amino acids. It helps release energy from foods and plays a part in the synthesis of fatty acids, which are important for healthy nervous system function.

Manganese is also a critical component of a mitochondrial antioxidant enzyme called superoxide dismutase. Because mitochondria consume large amounts of oxygen, they’re particularly vulnerable to oxidative stress. Manganese helps protect cellular mitochondria from free radical damage that can harm healthy cells, leading to poor health and premature aging.

Although manganese deficiency is rare, the presence of several other minerals in the diet (including iron, calcium and magnesium) can affect the bioavailability and proper absorption of manganese. Decreased levels may occur in those with diets heavy in processed foods or in those with poor bone health.
