According to folk lore, mullein was also made into the wicks of lamps and candles used in the incantations of witches. This explains one of the plant’s more colorful names, Hag’s Taper.”
Today, mullein is used to promote healthy breathing. It helps tone the respiratory system’s mucous membranes and stimulating fluid production which can help facilitate expectoration. The active compounds found in mullein include flavonoids, mucilage, saponins, tannins and volatile oil.
Mullein goes by other interesting names such as Flannel Flower, Our Lady’s Flannel, Old Man’s Flannel, Shepherd’s Club, Pig Taper, Rag Paper, Hare’s Beard, Clown’s Lungwort, Jacob’s Staff and Peter’s Staff.
