Glucosamine is a compound naturally formed in your body from glucose. Your body uses this nutrient to stimulate chondrocyte cells to create one of the main building blocks of joint cartilage -- proteoglycans. Over time, the amount of glucosamine your body creates decreases. As a result, cartilage and bones may begin to scrape against each other, joints become damaged, and the lubricating synovial fluid in joint spaces may become thin and watery.

Chondroitin sulfate -- a long chain of repeating sugars -- provides additional benefits. It has a bristle-brush configuration that allows it to attract and hold water to cartilage-building proteoglycan molecules. Because cartilage has no blood supply, this fluid is necessary to nourish and lubricate joints.

MSM (methylsulfonylmethane) is a natural source of organic sulfur, which is important for the formation of collagen, and is required by many of the body's structural molecules.
