Golden Berries: Fruit of the Inca
The Incan berry (Physalis peruviana), or Golden berry or Cape Gooseberry as it is variously called, grows on a small shrub, one to three feet in height. The shrub is native to Brazil and over time it spread to the highlands of Chile and Peru, thriving in warm, full-sun conditions with adequate rainfall. Cultivated by the Inca the fruit is protected papery husks that resemble Chinese lanterns.
Incan Golden berries are a good source of bioflavinoids (vitamin P), which possess anti-inflammatory, antioxidant and antiviral properties. They are high in phosphorus and vitamins A, C, B1, B2, B6 and B12. For a fruit, they are a good source of Protein and rich in Pectin. Being rich in protein and vitamins means a little goes a long way, so they’re a calories-wise snack, as well.
