Pepsin breaks down proteins into smaller more easily absorbed substances. As people age hydrochloric acid secretion may be reduced which can result in decreased levels of pepsin. Without proper pepsin levels the body has a difficult time digesting food. Betaine hydrochloride is used as a supplemental source of hydrochloric acid which can be utilized by the stomach to produce pepsin. "these are meant to be taken with a meal but when I take off the lid the smell would put me off of what I was eating and the taste is bad, also. I have taken Betaine HCL for years but have never encoutered this problem. Perhaps they would be better dispensed in a gelatin capsule? They do the trick but I am not going to continues their use....too upsetting"

"I didn't notice when I bought this that it was in tablet form. That wouldn't be so bad, except for the fact that they are kind of large and are not coated very well, so they kind of stick to your tongue. I normally don't have trouble swallowing big pills, but these are a little bit of a problem for me. But as far as effectiveness, they do the job."
