Are those cookies really vegan?

Being vegan requires vigilance. Whether you’re choosing a box of crackers or selecting a new shampoo, you’ve got to scour labels to be sure products are free of animal-derived ingredients.

For old pros, it’s easy. But if you’re new to veganism, you may need to brush up on the names of some components that aren’t as easily identified as “milk” or “eggs” on the side of the box. Here are a few to watch for:

  • Carmine/cochineal: This red dye—found in flavored beverages, candy, ice cream, cake, sauces, dips and some cosmetics—is derived from a small insect called the cochineal beetle.
  • Lanolin: An oily substance collected from sheep’s wool, lanolin is a popular ingredient in lotions, moisturizers, body washes, hair products and lip balms. Surprisingly, you’ll also find it in chewing gum
  • Vitamin D3: Drinking fortified milk or orange juice? Avoid those containing vitamin D3, which is derived from lanolin (see above). If you take a vitamin D3 supplement, be sure it’s clearly marked “vegan.”
  • Casein: Just because you avoid dairy products doesn’t mean you won’t run into casein. This protein, derived from cow’s milk, appears in many cereals, candies and beverages.
  • Glycerin: Also called glycerine and glycerol, glycerin in a clear, odorless liquid derived from either plant or animal fat. Double check to be sure your soaps, cosmetics and foods contain only plant-based glycerin.
  • Bone char: You probably won’t see it on an ingredients list, but be aware that many sugars are processed using bone char, or animal-derived charcoal. Stevia and agave are two plant-derived alternative sweeteners.
