Textured Vegetable Protein is a highly nutritious soy product. It is incredibly wealthy in complete protein and contains no fat, so it is an excellent alternative to meat. It is also a good source of dietary fiber, iron, magnesium and phosphorus. Textured Vegetable Protein is made from defatted soy flour that has been cooked under pressure and then dried. It is very easy to prepare and takes on the flavor of whatever recipe to which it is added, making it an incredibly versatile addition to a wide variety of dishes.


Directions

How to Prepare TVP

To rehydrate the granules, pour 7/8 cup boiling water, vegetable broth or stock over 1 cup TVP. Stir and let stand 5 to 10 minutes.

To cook in a microwave, cover tightly with plastic wrap and cook in high for 5-6 minutes; check after 2 minutes and add a little more liquid if needed. You can prepare a double batch of chunks, enough for 2 or 3 recipes, and the cooked TVP will keep in the refrigerator several days. Or freeze some to thaw later in a microwave or in the refrigerator. Once TVP has been rehydrated, it must be kept under refrigeration.

Great stuff - don't be scared, try it...it's good! At first I was very leary of this stuff...after going veg my sister gave me some and it sat in my fridge for months before I finally tossed it. I wasn't convinced of the whole "it takes on any flavor" thing (just like tofu), this took me a minute to get used to...BUT THEN, after spending tons of money on the store bought frozen "crumbles", my brain FINALLY realized this was the SAME STUFF (but cheaper - yaaay!) and why was I buying it frozen this whole time when I could be making it fresh whenever I needed it...and good thing too, it seems most of the stores I shop at no longer carry my frozen brand (boca) crumbles any more, just morningstar and they're not vegan (boooo!). Long story short, I make this with my no-beef (vegan) broth and then make it into tacos...love it! Don't be scared, it's not bad all all. I stock up on this stuff now, it's a vegan staple in my house! March 11, 2015

One of the Best Protein Extenders Ever! I absolutely LOVE Bob's Red Mill TVP. I use it in my spaghetti sauce along with the lean ground beef but can cut the amount of meat in half. TVP takes on the flavor of whatever you use it in. I also use it in meatloaf. It is good for you and extends any ground meat recipe including ground chicken and turkey. I wouldn't want to cook without TVP in my kitchen. Your price is good and the product stays fresh in an airtight container on my kitchen shelf. Please always carry this wonderful product.
