Silica (silicon) is required for proper integrity of the skin, ligaments, tendons, and bone. The highest concentrations of silicon in the body are found in skin and hair. Specifically, silicon is required by the enzyme, prolyhydroxylase, which is involved in collagen synthesis in bone, cartilage, and other connective tissues.
