Why Use If You Care Certified Compostable Bags?

Approximately 80 million tons of waste (U.S. EPA figures) which goes to landfill annually is material which under the right conditions, can be turned into compost, including food scraps, yard trimmings and non-recyclable paper. In a landfill environment, this organic material (food scraps, etc.) releases methane gas - a greenhouse gas - contributing to global warming. Diverting food scraps and yard trimmings from landfill to compost facilities - either municipal or commercial in areas where they are available - contributes significantly to preserving our planet and resources.

If You Care 100% Certified Compostable Tall Kitchen Bags are made from potato starch from non-GMO starch potatoes, blended with a certified, fully compostable polymer. No plasticizers are added.

What Makes Potato Starch Strong? Starch is a mixture of a linear (amylose) and a branched (amylopectin) polymer of glucose. Potato starch has a higher percentage of amylopectin than either corn or wheat starch. The structural integrity of starch is due to amylopectin, so this helps make If You Care Certified Compostable Bags stronger than bags made from corn starch.

Any Other Reasons for Potato Starch?

The potato starch used to make If You Care Certified Compostable Bags comes from starch potatoes, which are not grown for food but only for starch production. These potatoes are too high in starch to be good for food. Therefore, there is no diversion from food supplies. To product the same amount of starch from these potatoes as from corn requires 40% less land. These potatoes require no irrigation, and need only normal rainfall. Corn requires much more water.

If You Care Certified Compostable Bags are made from 100% GMO free potato starch and a fully compostable polymer. These bags are completely polyethylene free and plasticizer free.

Perfect Product! Although I have not used these bags for compost as yet, I have found they make a great liner for my kitchen wastepaper basket, which happens to be a large brown paper grocery bag. As I try to avoid using plastic bags of any sort, these bags are made of GMO free potatoes and therefore the perfect environmental solution. If You Care is a fine company and I use many of their other products as well. March 15, 2015
Great bags I agree that these are thin bags, but they are compostable and as the other reviewer said not meant to last for eons. If you don't overfill or put overly wet items in the garbage they work very well. As for tearing, I've used other brands which always ripped coming off the role. Just be careful and these will not rip. October 6, 2014
These are thin, inelastic, and tear I understand that compostable bags should be a bit inelastice, but, I've made other compostable bags work. Check the measurements on the box, I think that they indicate that the bag size is a wee bit smaller than other in width than other bags. Even worse, I can't get these off the roll without them tearing, immediately. They have tabs that tear easily and they don't hold much, at least not like the others that I've purchased. I would not recommend, nor would I buy these again. I am VERY unhappy with these. They only trash bin they fit is a small, straight, cylinder or square. August 6, 2014
The only bags we use for kitchen trash. We use these in our (plastic) kitchen trash can and have been for about two years now. I have yet to see one rip or tear open as another reviewer complained. There are two of us and we take the trash out once per week. Yes, they are lightweight but we put all kinds of non-recyclables in them and have never had a problem. Maybe their overfilling them??? This isn't a "stretch" bag. It's not meant to last for the next 100 years in a landfill either. The bags are on a roll, all attached to one another with a perforated seam at the top. Their easy to pull apart. If your looking for something that can handle being overfilled with heavy objects like glass bottles and extremes of that nature; this probably isn't the bag for you. They work for us and I will continue to purchase. March 1, 2014
falls apart! just pulling the partially full bag out of my metal kitchen container made several holes in the first bag i've used! stuff was falling out as i put it in the outside can... i had to pick up orange peels, avocado pits, egg shells and a plastic containers from Trader Joe's of the porch & outside on my way back inside. Love that it is compostable, which is why i purchased them... but it has to be sturdy and thick enough to hold the garbage! Total Rip-Off-surprised this inferior product exists... and that Viticost carries it. Don't Buy! if you want your garbage to remain in a bag, not on the floor & driveway, dropping as you go to empty it. May 27, 2013
