Low-Carb Eating Healthy

The low-carb diet craze of the past two decades has fueled a frenzy of special foods, recipes and diet books. But amidst all the hype, the controversy still remains: is low-carb eating healthy?

A low-carb diet typically calls for restricted intake of digestible carbohydrates, like those found in breads, pastas and sugars. These foods are often replaced with others high in protein and fat, from sources such as poultry, beef, fish, beans, nuts, eggs and cheese.

Not surprisingly, the healthiness of the low-carb diet depends on the individual. Those who choose to replace dietary carbs with processed meats, fatty cheeses and massive amounts of low-carb snacks (especially those packed with sugar alcohols) may not be doing themselves any favors.

On the other hand, it’s entirely possible to eat a healthy, balanced low-carb diet consisting of lean proteins, low-fat dairy, leafy greens and other fiber-rich fruits and veggies. Is low-carb eating healthy? It can be - and it’s up to you to make it so!
