Weight Reduction It's hard to believe that another summer is over. It just seems like yesterday when I was talking about summer being right around the corner and urging all of you that were overweight to try to shed a few extra pounds so that you would look good in your bathing suits. For those of you who accomplished this, you deserve a hearty congratulation. Unfortunately, however, I know that many of you may have had good intentions, but were not able to follow through in any meaningful fashion.
Although the summer may be over, the need to lose excessive weight is more important than ever. Now in a recent medical publication, a new survey of more than 9,500 hundred Americans indicated that obesity was associated with a higher rate of chronic medical problems and overall poorer quality of life compared to alcohol abuse, smoking or poverty. Dr.Rowland Sturm and Kenneth Wells indicate "Americans haven't given overweight the same attention as other risks, like smoking, but it is clearly a top health problem and one that is on the rise in all segments of the population." They further comment that the study "reinforces prior recommendations that weight control become a higher national priority, especially given the dramatic increases in prevalence of overweight." Obesity has been shown to increase the risk of heart disease, diabetes, hypertension and even certain forms of cancer. The positive side of this, however, is that by losing even a modest amount of weight, one can improve their health and reduce overall morbidity and mortality.

Diets high in sugar and refined carbohydrates like bread, pasta, cereal, and other mainly 'low-fat' processed foods increase your body's production of insulin. When insulin is at high levels in the body, the food you eat can get readily converted into body fat, in the form of triglycerides (to top it off, high triglyceride levels in the body are one of the greatest risk factors for heart disease).
