Nepeta cataria Hardy Perennial
Cat nip is a member of the mint family. It spreads rapidly and produces lavender flowers. The lemon-mint flavor and fragrance of its leaves makes a relaxing tea for humans. Of course, cats love it, too! Using catnip as a companion plant can help deter many pests, including flea beetles.
Did You Know? Catnip tea has been used as an herbal remedy for colds, influenza and fevers.
Soil and Water: Seed directly in late spring after the last frost, or start indoors. you may want to grow it in containers to prevent it from becoming a renegade in the garden. Catnip prefers moderate water, but is drought tolerant once established.
Planting and Growing: The average germination rate for catnip seed is only 40%. Once established, the plant will send out runners and spread rapidly.
Harvesting and Storage: Gather the flowering tops in late summer and dry in the shade. Store away from moisture.
