Chives are useful s a companion plant throughout the garden to help reduce the insect population.
Did You Know? Freeze-drying is the best drying method to preserve the chive's delicate flavor.
Soil and Water: Chives like loose, well-drained soil rich in organic matter. Water evenly and moderately while establishing.
Planting and Growing: Start 4-6 weeks before the last frost or sow directly once soils have reached 55F. Chives grow slowly and usually need about a year of growth before they can be routinely harvested. They can be potted and moved indoors to provide a fresh supply for cooking all year.
Harvesting and Storage: Snip leaves when large enough to use. The flowers are also edible and have a mild oniony flavor. Harvest flowers before they open completely to avoid reseeding tendencies.
