Salvia officinalis Perennial
This is a culinary, large-leaved sage variety. used both dried and fresh, sage leaves are a popular poultry and meat seasoning. Sage also makes a soothing tea.
Did You Know? While a sage plant is in its prime, it makes an attractive addition to both herb gardens and ornamental borders. Pruning after flowering will keep the plant from getting too leggy or woody.
Soil and Water: Sage prefers well-drained, moderately rich soil with plenty of organic matter. Provide light afternoon shade in warmer climates. It requires minimum water once established. Hardy in zones 4-8.
Planting and Growing: Start seeds indoors 6-8 weeks before the last frost. Sage makes a good companion plant, especially for rosemary, cabbage, and carrots; sage deters cabbage moth.
Harvesting and Storage: Harvest leaves when the plant is large enough. Use leaves fresh or dry and store leaves in a n airtight container. Sage also keeps well frozen.
