Acidophilus
Acidophilus, or Lactobacillus acidophilus, is a type of bacteria known as a "probiotic." Probiotics are living organisms that, once ingested, colonize the digestive tract and promote digestive and immune health. Acidophilus is known, in particular, for producing lactase, the enzyme needed to digest milk sugar (which lactose-intolerant people are lacking). Commonly found in yogurt and other fermented dairy products, acidophilus is also available acidophilus tablet and acidophilus capsule form. When purchasing acidophilus supplements, look for products containing at least one billion colony forming units per serving for best health benefits. Acidophilus supplements should be taken daily to maintain optimum digestive and immune health.**
