Heat 4 quarts of water to a rolling boil. Add salt if desired.
Gradually stir in pasta. Return to boiling.
Cook uncovered for 8 minutes, stirring occasionally.
Drain well. Toss immediately with sauce or coat with 1 tablespoon olive oil, butter, or margarine if desired.
