| Description: Black Cohosh is a plant found in the forests of North America. It has traditionally been used to treat snake bites, leading to its alternate name of Black Snakeroot. Black Cohosh is the most effective herb in the treatment of menopausal hot flashes.1 Black Cohosh causes estrogen-like activity in the body, and should be taken in fairly high concentration twice daily. Women who are undergoing estrogen therapy should consult with their doctors before taking Black Cohosh. Natural Sources: Can be found in plant form, but usually is taken as a capsule or tincture. Useful in treatment of: menopause. Recommended Dosage: Dry powdered extract (4:1) 250 to 500 mg three times/day. Fluid extract (1:1) 1 teaspoon three times/day.2 Contraindications: pregnancy and Post Partum: Black cohosh can cause contractions. While it may be helpful as a method of naturally inducing labor, it should never be used before week 37 of pregnancy or without the approval of a health care provider. References: 1Duker EM.
