Butyrate
Description: Butyrate is a short chain fatty acid. It is produced by the fermentation of fibers within the colon. The only natural source of butyrate is in cow milkfat. Up to 10% of milk’s fatty acids appears to be butyric acid. It is in this form that butyrate can be transmitted directly to the body, rather than forming from fiber fermentation.
Butyrate is used by colon cells for energy. It is effective in the treatment of ulcerative colitis.
