| Description: The mushroom Reishi (ganoderma lucidum) has been used in Chinese medicine for over 4000 years. It was believed to be an elixir of immortality, since it took away fatigue and weakness. Other traditional uses include treatment of asthma, insomnia, and cough. Reishis active constituents include sterols, coumarin, mannitol, polysaccharides, and triterpenoids. The triterpenoids help to lower blood pressure and decrease LDL cholesterol levels. They also help to reduce blood platelet coagulation, and may help lower the risk of heart disease. Reishi may be helpful in treating chronic hepatitis B.1 Natural Sources: The fresh mushroom may also be used for medicinal effect. Useful in treatment of: hepatitis. Recommended Dosage: 1.5 to 9 grams dried mushroom daily, or 1.4 grams powdered daily. Contraindications: May cause dizziness, dry mouth, nose bleeds, and abdominal upset.
