What is Vitacost DLPA DL-Phenylalanine?
Vitacost DLPA DL-Phenylalanine is a combination of the D and L forms of the amino acid phenylalanine. Phenylalanine is an essential amino acid, meaning the body needs it, but can’t make it on its own—it must be obtained through diet. Foods such as meat, poultry, fish, milk, eggs and cheese are good sources of phenylalanine.
L-phenylalanine is a precursor to neurochemicals and hormones such as dopamine, epinephrine, norepinephrine, adrenaline and noradrenaline, which are released during times of stress or excitement. Adrenal hormones help the body prepare for action during times of fight or flight. Neurochemicals give rise to feelings of euphoria, happiness and mood elevation.*
D-phenylalanine is known to block the activity of carboxypeptidase, an enzyme which degrades enkephalins, which are morphine-like substances that gives marathon runners what’s known as “runner’s high.” Phenylalanine also synthesizes phenylethylamine, the molecule found in chocolate that is responsible for pleasurable effects on mood.*
