Going for zip in an Asian-style dish? Seeking spicy taste in your cookies and cakes? Ginger has been a go-to spice in savory and sweet cooking around the world for centuries, adding warmth and exotic flavor to everything from stewed fruits and bubbly ales to curries and vegetable soups.
From the twisted underground stem, or rhizome, of a flowering tropical plant (Zingiber officinale), ginger plucked young is fleshy and juicy, its insides ideal brewed into tea or pickled for a snack. Older roots are drier and more fibrous with intense flavor, fabulous grated or powdered for easy addition to baked-goods batters, smoothies, stir fry dishes and more.
How to enjoy it:
Use ¼ teaspoon of ground ginger to replace 1 teaspoon of grated, fresh ginger in recipes.
Simple ginger tea: Add ¼ teaspoon of ginger powder to mug and pour in 1 cup boiling water. Let tea cool and use mesh strainer to strain. Sweeten with honey.
Soothing ginger milk: Add ¼ teaspoon of ginger powder, ½ teaspoon of turmeric and 1 teaspoon of cinnamon to a cup of warm almond milk. Sweeten with honey.
