You might have put some thought into which luxuriously soft vegan blush brush you were going to buy – but after you use it to quickly swipe on a bit of color, it’s back in your cosmetics bag. The truth is, makeup brushes don’t cross your mind very often.

But did you know that the brushes, sponges and other makeup tools you use on a daily basis could actually be causing breakouts?

To prevent the buildup of oil, dirt, bacteria and other pore-clogging debris, it’s recommended that you thoroughly clean your tools at least once a week. How? Follow these quick steps:

1. Holding your brush with fibers pointing down, run under the faucet to soak all bristles. If you’re cleaning a sponge, soak it in lukewarm water.

2. Add a small amount of mild shampoo or body wash to your palm and apply it to the brush fibers or sponge. (Dr. Bronner’s Unscented Pure Castile Soap works perfectly – and you can use it to clean just about anything!)

3. Squeeze the brush/sponge, and be amazed (or disgusted) at just how much dirt and makeup has collected on it! As you’re squeezing, keep the bristles pointed down and the water running. Do this until the water comes out clear.

4. Lay your sponges and brushes down to dry on a towel, re-shape the bristles if necessary. Be sure they’re completely dry before using again.
