Four Unusual Uses for Garlic

Garlic is a versatile vegetable that makes a flavorful addition to many foods. But its usefulness doesn’t stop at pizza and pasta! Let’s explore four less-known uses for this pungent plant:

1. Pest Control: Garlic’s overpowering odor can easily repel friends and family, but it may have some use as a natural repellent for bothersome pests, too. Look for garlic-based bug sprays for yourself, your pets and even your garden! (Note: Do not rub raw garlic on your skin or feed it to your pet.)

2. Throat Soother: Feeling under the weather? Try a garlic tea to soothe your minor cough or sore throat. Just add 2-3 cloves of peeled garlic, a teaspoon of honey and the juice of one lemon to a cup of hot water. Steep, strain and drink.

3. Passionate Plant: Adding more garlic to your plate may not sound (or smell) romantic, but for centuries many different cultures considered the “stinking rose” (as garlic is sometimes called) an aphrodisiac of sorts. Modern research has yet to prove this benefit, but some speculate that it could be due to garlic’s potential to promote healthy circulation within the body.

4. Heart Helper: Allicin, a specific compound found in garlic, may offer supports for cardiovascular health and platelet function, as well as healthy cholesterol levels already within normal range.
