What is the raw food diet? It is an eating plan that consists entirely of uncooked, unprocessed foods. Raw foods, or foods in their natural state, include fresh or dried fruits, vegetables, sprouts, beans, whole grains and nuts.
Those who follow a raw food diet do not cook or bake with high heat - so the stove, oven and microwave are off limits. Some raw food diet recipes call for the use of a food dehydrator, which is allowed if the temperature remains below 115 degrees.
Is eating nothing but raw foods healthy? Considering the raw food diet is heavy in nutrient-rich foods such as fruits and vegetables, it can be a healthy eating plan for some. Much like vegans, raw foodists should be vigilant about consuming enough calcium, iron, vitamin B12, vitamin D and omega-3 EFAs, as these nutrients are typically found in animal products that require cooking or pasteurizing.
Raw foods can provide some of these nutrients - including calcium from cabbage, essential fatty acids from flaxseed and vitamin B12 from fortified cereals. When diet alone is not enough, supplements can be helpful for those who follow the raw food diet.See All Raw Foods
