“Eating clean” has become a mantra for many dieters. But when cold weather comes and thoughts of macaroni and cheese dance in your head, those clean-eating commands can get overpowered by the urge for comfort food.
What to do?
Combine clean-eating principles with diet-friendly versions of your favorite comfort foods. And I’ve got the skinny on my own faves that I think you’ll enjoy.
- Hello, soup. But not just any soup. Dr. McDougall’s Tortilla with Baked Chips Big Cup Soup will warm you all the way down to your toes with delicious spices. And it’s virtuously vegan and gluten-free, with just 100 calories per serving.
- Did someone say healthy macaroni and cheese? Yes, and it’s made with quinoa. This fabulously flavored gluten-free version contains no trans fat, four grams of fiber and five grams of protein. One heaping cup of Ancient Harvest Organic Quinoa Mac and Cheese has less than 250 calories.
- On a cold day, hot cocoa hits the spot. Avoid the guilt with Just Like Sugar Guilt-Free Hot Cocoa Mix.
- If you have limited space in your cupboard, make sure to leave room for oatmeal. It’s great for breakfast, of course. But when you’re tired and want something soothing and light for dinner, try making a bowl of oatmeal and mixing it with a big tablespoon of nut butter. It’s fiber-rich, protein-rich, high in healthy fats and the ultimate comfort food. My favorite combo is Bob’s Red Mill Gluten Free Whole Grain Rolled Oats and Vitacost Almond Butter.
