Do you know about apple cider vinegar? It’s basically your great-great-grandma’s coconut oil. Apple cider vinegar (ACV) has American roots as far back as the 17th Century, when it was used as a health tonic, natural preservative of fruits and veggies and as a household cleaner. It did it all – and, thankfully, still does! Though there may be an infinite number of uses for apple cider vinegar, you can start with just a handful of the healthiest, most practical purposes for today’s modern world.
When choosing apple cider vinegar, opt for an organic, unfiltered variety. This will have the “mother,” which is what contains all the apple cider vinegar benefits you want. Once you’ve found your bottle, use your apple cider vinegar as a(n)…
1. Energizing tonic
This concoction was called “switchels” back in the day. To make your switchel, simply mix about 1-1/2 to 2 teaspoons of apple cider vinegar with the following:
3 cups pure pineapple juice
1/4 cup pure lime juice
2 Tbsp. Manuka honey
2. DIY hair purifier
In a spray bottle, combine 1 part apple cider vinegar with 4 parts water. Use this as a clarifying shampoo. Adjust ratio, as needed.
3. Facial toner
In a spray bottle or empty (and cleaned-out) skincare container, combine 1 part apple cider vinegar with 2 parts water. Add a few drops to a cotton pad and swipe your face clean. Again, adjust the ACV and water to your desired astringency.
4. Household cleaner
You can use the same spray bottle you made for your hair cleaner. Simply spritz the mixture on countertops and tile floors to keep them clean and smelling fresh (like apples!).
5. Sore-throat soother
Mix ACV with hot water, honey, lemon and cinnamon to make a soothing drink when you feel that tickle in your throat.
