It’s not easy being blue. When you’re feeling down in the dumps — no matter what the cause — one of the easiest and healthiest ways to get back on your feet is to show yourself a little love. Keep that chin up, and choose one of these five simple activities to turn your frown upside down.
1. Get a good night’s sleep
A good night’s sleep can improve mood, sharpen alertness and increase energy for your daily workouts. Adults between the ages of 26 and 64 need at least 7 to 9 hours of sleep each night, according to the National Sleep Foundation. So instead of staying up late at the end of a busy day, hit the hay. Turn off all devices (including the TV) at least an hour before bed, and unwind with a relaxing nighttime routine. Curl up with a hot cup of tea and a good book or do some light stretching to see how your sleep improves. If ditching your devices is a non-negotiable for you, try using blue light blockers or set your devices to “night shift.”
2. Make a delicious breakfast
What’s better than a mug of your favorite morning beverage? Pairing it with a delicious breakfast! Whether you enjoy a stack of pancakes or homemade waffles, a filling morning glory muffin made with Simple Mills banana muffin & bread mix, pair your favorite breakfast food with your favorite tea or coffee and start your day off with a satisfying meal.
3. Take a Walk in the Park
Don’t let a bout of bad weather keep you indoors; instead, head outside for a walk in the park. According to the USDA, people who walk 15 too 30 minutes a day are healthier than people who don’t. Whether you stroll in silence or listen to your favorite podcast while you stroll, take some time to get out in nature for a breath of fresh air.
4. Treat yourself to a wholesome meal
In our day to day lives, many of us show love and care toward other people, but we often forget about the most important person — ourselves! Rather than serving the rest of the family and then doing dishes while everyone eats or scarfing down a fast-food burger on the way to pick up your kids from soccer practice, take time to cook a healthy meal for yourself. Plate it caringly, take a seat and savor every bite!
5. Work it out
Getting in a good workout releases endorphins that will make you feel good all day long, so hit the trails for an outdoor run, go to the gym for a new class or visit a local studio. Need some motivation? Ask a friend to go with you then share a delicious snack afterwards. Try some or sprouted seed crackers topped with dairy=free cheese and organic turkey slices. Satisfy any lingering sweet tooth cravings with ready to eat crunchy cookies.
Whether you try one or all of these self-care recommendations, make sure you take some time to show yourself some love every day!
