Autumn is a season that brings many treats – cooler days, beautiful colors as the natural world transitions and most of all a variety of aromas to delight our senses. My nose is tickled by the spicy essential oils that I use more this time of year in blends – cinnamon, clove, nutmeg, ginger and cardamom. It is an easy time to incorporate natural aromas into fall celebrations and décor.
Here are some tricks (and treats) with essential oils to use this season:
- To warm up and scent your kitchen, add a spicy essential oil to a pot of water and 2 tablespoons of vanilla. Let it simmer over low heat on the stove and fill your home with comforting aromas.
- Make a natural potpourri – find dried orange slices, dried apple slices, whole dried cloves, cinnamon sticks, dried leaves and twigs to combine. You can use the dried material to drop your essential oils onto and reapply as often as you like. Add up to 20 drops of oil per cup of potpourri mixture – start slow, however, as some of these spicy oils can be overwhelming in large amounts.
- Add a few drops of cinnamon leaf essential oil to fuzzy slipper socks to toast your tootsies in lieu of warming them in front of the fire. Or, create a simple warming foot rub by adding 3 drops of cinnamon leaf oil to an ounce of a massage oil to work into cold feet.
- Drop essential oils on logs that are burning in the fireplace (or fire pits) to complement the sensory experience of relaxing in front of a fire.
- Create your own home spray or mist to clean, purify and scent your home to stay happy and healthy this autumn. If you need a little help with a recipe – here is one of our favorite seasonal sprays. Enjoy this wonderful, magical time of year!
