5 Ways to Wake Up Tired Winter Skin

Q: Winter is wreaking havoc on my skin””please help!

Licensed esthetician Catie Wiggy of MyChelle Dermaceuticals responds:

Whether you’re battling freezing temps, harsh winds or worse, winter is cruel to skin. Fluctuations in temperature and humidity outdoors, plus artificial heat filling our indoor spaces, can have drying and dehydrating effects. Pores become clogged with debris and skin can suffer from a buildup of dead cells, leaving it looking dull, tired and run down.

Luckily, restoring that healthy, vibrant glow you cherish during warmer months of the year is easier than you think. Just follow these simple steps:

1. Scrub a dub dub

Winter skin tends to be plagued by an accumulation of dead cells, making exfoliation an essential step in your skincare routine. Exfoliation sloughs away dead cells, or releases the intercellular glue hanging onto those cells, exposing newer and healthier versions underneath. It also helps unblocks pores””which in turn leaves them open and more receptive to whatever topical products (serums, lotions, etc.) you apply next. So, not only does exfoliation have its own benefits””it also makes your other skin care treatments more effective!

Try the MyChelle Fruit Fiesta Peel, with multi-fruit acids and 7 percent lactic acid, to renew a youthful glow and texture. It also contains a potent alpha-hydroxy acid blend which smooths the look of wrinkles and leaves skin feeling refreshed and invigorated with a light tingling sensation.

2. Get more H2O

Skin is composed of approximately 70 percent water and is responsible for protecting us while also preventing moisture loss. Internal hydration is a must for repairing run down-looking skin. Drinking eight to 10 glasses of water daily will help prevent dehydration, which can make the skin appear dry, dull and even wrinkly. While water won’t instantly rid you of wrinkles, it can contribute to a refreshed, revived look””so, drink up!

3. Focus on the eyes

Dark circles and puffiness around the eyes make us look tired, even when we’re well rested. For an instant pick-me-up, try using Magnolia Fresh Eyes. Its unique blend of peptides and plant extracts sheds light on even the darkest under-eye shadows and sends bags packing. Eyeseryl ® Peptide strengthens weakened capillaries and supports the release of excess fluid responsible for dark circles and puffiness. Green coffee stimulates and revives while magnolia leaf extract helps strengthen and promote repair for a well-rested look. Apply a pearl-size amount under the eye area with your fingertip on freshly cleansed skin morning and night.

4. Work from within

For a glowing complexion (and healthy hair), be sure your diet includes plenty of essential fatty acids (EFAs). Our bodies don’t make these skin-supporting nutrients on their own, so it’s important to get them from foods. Wild salmon, flaxseed, walnuts, wild rice, beans and enriched dairy products and eggs are all good sources; but if your diet is lacking, you can always take an EFA supplement.

5. Keep up the routine

A consistent regimen of cleansing, toning, nourishing and protecting “” morning and evening “” can rehabilitate weathered, dull and lifeless skin. Make sure you’re taking good care of your skin and giving it the TLC it needs. When you’re consistent with your regimen, you will see and feel the results and benefits from products you’re using.
