No Room for Relaxation

After giving birth to Jacob, I noticed my nails were getting brittle and unsightly. And since I don’t have a spare minute to cut, file and paint them, I decided to get my nails done at a salon. I thought it would be relaxing.

I took my son with me because he’s a good baby and usually just coos while I’m busy — if I’m especially lucky he will fall asleep. (Yep, I know I just jinxed myself by saying that.) My friend, Megan, also came along with her boyfriend and two-year-old son in tow.

I  am seated quickly and they begin the process on my nails. No less than three minutes after I sit down, Jacob decides he is tired and needs to be held to go to sleep. Of course I can’t, because my hands are now covered in globs of lotion while my cuticles are being jabbed (ouch) and trimmed. Megan saves the day and comes over to hold him and rock him to sleep, but surprisingly (sarcasm)  he doesn’t want anyone but mommy. After 15 minutes of unsuccessfully trying to console my crying infant, she lays him back in the stroller.

Throughout the salon I hear snippets of conversation, “that baby is hungry” … “she should hold him.” The women are looking at me like I have  three heads.

At that moment, I wanted nothing more than to stand up and say, “Listen LADIES, I know my child and he’s not hungry. He’s sleepy. He needs to nap, but he’s fighting it. He will fall asleep eventually. I am not neglecting him. So please keep your eyes and mouths to yourselves.”

I didn’t though. I just smiled and kept talking to my sweet boy until he drifted off to sleep.

The worst part of the whole ordeal? My nail is now infected after the technician cut me by mistake. Next time I plan a relaxing day, there are definitely a few things I will do differently. (:

Vitacost customer service and social marketing whiz Catherine just ordered Vitacost Hair, Skin and Nails formula and is counting the days until her son is old enough to take Gaia Herbs Gaiakidsâ„¢ Sleep and Relax Syrup.
