From its name, you might assume this herb helps with libido. But the “passion” in passion flower actually refers to the passion of Jesus Christ in Christian theology. Spanish Christian missionaries in the 15th and 16th centuries believed different parts of the plant represented the last days of Jesus’ life. Most notably, the plant’s corona was said to resemble the crown of thorns Jesus wore on the day he was crucified.
As an herbal supplement, passion flower (Passiflora incarnata L.) has been used throughout time as a sleep aid and calming agent. Although scientists have not yet discovered how the herb works, it’s believed to increase a brain chemical called gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA), which affects the activity of certain brain cells, promoting relaxation.
Several studies have tested the effects of passion flower on people with anxiety symptoms, with results showing it had calming effects on mood. However, the herb is often used in combination with other herbal extracts, and further investigation is needed to determine its specific effect on restlessness, irritability and sleep.
For now, to experience the benefits of this herb, drink a cup of tea brewed with passion flower leaves (one teaspoon of dried herb per one cup of water). To support healthy sleep, have a cup about an hour before bedtime. To relieve occasional anxiety, drink three to four cups throughout the day.
Passion flower is also available as a supplement in liquid or capsule form.
