AH-CHOO! Unfortunately, this can be a familiar sound that, for some, signals the arrival of spring. While there may be no escaping the onslaught of pollen when you step outside, there are several things you can do in the comfort of your own home to support your well-being this spring.

1.     Eat Well, Be Well: This may be a no-brainer, but getting the right amounts of vitamins, minerals, antioxidants and other nutrients can help support every basic body system and function, helping you maintain overall wellness regardless of the season. If your diet is lacking (and it likely is), consider a multi-vitamin with a full spectrum of nutrients to fill in the gaps.

2.     Clean House: Is your house hopping with dust bunnies? Common household allergens, such as pet dander, mold and dust, can collect on surfaces and in carpets and furniture. Regular cleaning and vacuuming (preferably with a HEPA filter system) can reduce the buildup of such irritants. Consider protecting your mattress and box spring with a plastic allergen-resistant cover that can keep dust mites from settling in.

3.     Clear the Air: Remember to change air conditioner filters every three months to avoid clog and buildup. The addition of an air filter or purifier can further remove indoor pollutants such as pet hair, smoke, dust, lint, mold, bacteria and other airborne particles “” so you can breathe easy.

4.     Rinse & Repeat: A daily nasal rinse (typically done with a saline solution and administered using a pot or spray) can wash away harmful pollutants, pollens, icky mucus and other irritants to support normal nasal health.

5.     Reduce Stress: Keep the release of stress hormones to a minimum, as they may exacerbate any of the body’s discomforts. Since a complete and total elimination of all stressors is likely impossible, do the best you can to reduce your exposure and reaction to stressful situations. Schedule time for relaxing activities, such as yoga, meditation, or even walking. Practice slow breathing techniques when you’re feeling frazzled. Make sure you’re getting plenty of water and exercise, as well as sleep and relaxation””take care of your body so it can serve you well!
