Chew Away Your Cravings

There’s been a lot of buzz in the news lately about some unexpected benefits of chewing gum, including curbing cravings for sweets and other snacks, maintaining energy levels, and even quelling boredom!  Personally, I’ve been chewing gum for all of these reasons (and more) for several years, so this comes as no surprise.

Several studies have shown that chewing a piece of gum before a meal can lead to lessened calorie consumption, while popping a piece after you’ve eaten may help combat post-meal drowsiness. Enjoying a stick of gum between meals may help fight the urge to snack, and satisfy a craving for sweets. Plus, the act of chewing burns 11 calories per hour!

The benefits of gum don’t end there, though. Gum chewing can also promote concentration and alertness, making it a popular treat for athletes. It can also relieve boredom, stave off stress, and help increase saliva production, supporting normal digestion and oral health.

Of course, the most benefit comes from the sugar-free variety. If you’re not comfortable with conventional artificial sweeteners like aspartame, look for a gum that’s sweetened with xylitol. In addition to making your gum tasty, this naturally occurring substance has some pretty sweet side-effects that may help promote a healthy mouth.
