If you’re lucky enough to live near an apple orchard, you know that apple season is in full swing. Aside from baking delicious pies, did you know that you can use apples to:

1. Maintain moisture: Placing half an apple in the same container as your freshly baked cake or muffins can keep your baked goods moist and fresh, even when stored on the counter.

2. Absorb salt: Oh no! The recipe called for a “pinch,” but you accidentally doused your stew with salt. No sweat ““ just add several apple wedges and let them cook with your stew for several minutes to absorb the excess salt.

3. Ripen other fruits: Can’t wait for your fruits to naturally ripen? Place ripe apples in a paper bag with other unripened fruits (including tomatoes, bananas and avocadoes) to speed the ripening process.

4. Sweeten recipes: Apples are a great addition to any recipe, adding a sweet (or tart, depending on the type of apple) burst of flavor. Use diced apples in salsa, chutney or flavored cocktails. Add pureed apples to smoothies, sauces and glazes.

5. Decorate your table: Add a touch of autumn to your home by decorating with fresh or dried apples. Create a wonderfully scented living centerpiece with fresh apples, gourds and cinnamon sticks. Add dried apples to a wreath or garland to adorn your doorway or mantle.

6. Freshen your face: Combine 1 grated apple with a few tablespoons of honey and a handful of uncooked oats to make a sweet-smelling facial mask that nourishes the skin.
