Hosting a holiday barbecue or heading to a backyard party this weekend? Consider these five tips to make it a healthy one!
1. Be active. Summer is no time to sit around! Set up the volleyball net, throw horseshoes, organize a softball game or play tag with the kids.
2. Wear sunscreen. Protect yourself and your family from the strong summer sun with a natural sunscreen product. Reapply every two hours if necessary.
3. Grill safely. Barbecue safely by only doing so outdoors on a clean grill. Bring a meat thermometer to make sure all items are cooked to the appropriate temperature ““ but don’t overcook or char your meats. Keep children and fireworks away from the grill. (Tune in Wednesday for more healthy summer grilling tips!)
4. Switch out snacks and sides. Forgo the fattening potato chips and macaroni salad and instead opt for healthier choices, such as whole-wheat crackers topped with low-fat cheese, pita chips and hummus, a fresh summer fruit salad or grilled zucchini spears. Or consider modifying your traditional recipes with healthier ingredients, like macaroni or potato salad made with plain low-fat yogurt in place of mayo.
5. Don’t skip dessert. The best barbecues always end with a sweet dessert. Watermelon is a satisfying and healthy summer treat that’s perfect for your backyard party. If you’re in the mood for something more, serve small single-size portions of low-fat ice cream or 100% juice popsicles to keep everyone cool!
