All Calories Are Not Created Equal

For years, dieters were handed calorie counters and told that they could eat what they wanted as long as they stayed within a certain limit. Now, as diets such as the Paleo plan and low-carb diets become more popular, we’re learning that the quality of those calories counts just as much or more than the number of calories you consume.

Counting Calories

So when it comes to using your calories wisely, here are some suggestions in different categories.

Protein

Sure, you can go to a drive-through and order a triple burger with cheese (hold the bun, add extra cheese). But do you know what’s in that meat? Instead, consider sustainably caught wild fish, such as Wild Planet Wild Pacific Sockeye Salmon.

We’re also fans of protein drinks – but not all protein drinks are created equal. Tip: If you can’t pronounce it, don’t buy it! Try DIY protein drinks with powders such as MRM All Natural Veggie Protein powder.

Fruit

Those cans of fruit in the store often contain heaping quantities of sugar and fake flavorings. Ick. For the convenience of cans and full-fruit flavor, try Eden Foods Organic Dried Cranberries Sweetened with Apple Juice.

Another favorite to keep on hand: unsweetened applesauce, such as Tree of Life.

Beans and Vegetables

Broccoli, green beans, spinach and lettuce – the world is a wealth of great veggies. Top with beans, such as Eden Foods Black Beans or Organic Garbanzo Beans, to get a boost of fiber and protein.

Desserts

We have one word for you: Chocolate! Shown to be high in antioxidants, dark chocolate provides you with a delicious way to use your calories and boost your health. Combine with almonds and you’ve got a winner in Valor Dark Chocolate.

Another great way to go: Jazz up fresh fruit such as sliced peaches with sugar-free, calorie-free Walden Farms chocolate syrup.
