As the very building blocks of your body’s protein, amino acids are crucial to many different functions and systems. There are 20 amino acids, but only half are naturally produced by the body. The remaining 10, known as essential amino acids, must be obtained through diet, in dairy products, lean meats and legumes.  Let’s take a brief look at these essential amino acids and what they can do for you:

  1. Arginine: Considered “essential” for infants and children.  In adults, it supports thymus function, male sexual function, weight management and muscle growth.
  2. Histidine: Crucial for tissue growth and repair, supports healthy nervous system and blood pressure levels already within normal range.
  3. Isoleucine: May help support healthy blood sugar levels already within normal range. Can aid athletes by supporting the healing and repairing of muscle tissue and skin.
  4. Leucine: Together with Isoleucine and Valine, works to promote healthy muscle tissue, skin and bones. May also help support healthy blood sugar levels already in the normal range.
  5. Lysine: Aids in calcium absorption and collagen production, promoting healthy cartilage and tissue.
  6. Methionine: A powerful antioxidant that supports healthy hair, skin and nails. Assists in the breakdown of fats. Contributes to the body’s natural detoxification process.
  7. Phenylalanine: Aids in the brain’s production norepinephrine, a chemical that transmits signals between nerve cells. Promotes alertness, vitality, healthy mood and memory.
  8. Threonine:  Important for the formation of collagen, elastin and tooth enamel. Supports healthy metabolism.
  9. Tryptophan: Contains naturally relaxing properties, helping to promote normal sleep-wake cycle  and healthy mood. Supports normal immune function and healthy weight management.
  10. Valine: Needed for muscle metabolism and coordination, as well as tissue repair. Acts as a source of energy for muscle tissue. Promotes mental vigor and a feeling of overall calm.
