Are Plastic Bottles Safe?

There is no doubt that the invention of plastic changed the world in many different ways. Just looking around, you’ll see thousands of products made from plastic that make everyday life more convenient. Recently, however, there’s been a lot of discussion about the hazards of plastic, particularly with one item many of us use on a daily basis: plastic bottles.

Most hard, non-disposable plastic water bottles are made from polycarbonate resin, which gives them their durability and keeps them from holding flavors or odors. It may sound helpful, but there is one major problem with polycarbonate resin, and that is bisphenol-A (better known as “BPA”). Exposure to heat and chemical detergents can cause this compound to seep into the bottle’s contents. BPA may impair reproductive organs and disrupt normal endocrine function, as well as deliver other damaging health effects.

What’s a would-be, well-hydrated person to do? If you want to reap the benefits of water and other liquids without the harmful effects of BPA, there are options. Stainless steel bottles (as long as they are stainless steel inside and out, with no epoxy finish) are one durable, BPA-free alternative. There are also many plastic bottles on the market today that are made without bisphenol-A.

To ensure that your bottles stay clean and stand up to the test of time, keep them out of the sunlight and other heat sources. Also, wash them frequently with warm water and biodegradable soap, letting them completely dry out before refilling to avoid bacterial growth.
