It happens to everyone””you forgot to brush your teeth, you ate a garlicky meal, you just smoked a cigarette. Bad breath is a nuisance, an embarrassment and can be an obstacle to having a happy and normal day.
Poor oral hygiene is the number one cause of bad breath. Not brushing or flossing properly may leave food particles between teeth that can become rotten and emit a foul odor. Experts recommend brushing at least twice a day, flossing at least once a day, and seeing your dentist twice a year for regular checkups and cleanings.
If you feel you have bad breath all the time, see your doctor. Bad breath is sometimes the result of a medical condition, such as periodontal disease or a respiratory illness.
In the meantime, there are a few things you can do to minimize occurrences of bad breath:
“¢ Chew gum. The saliva it produces will help wash away food particles and bacteria. The chemical makeup of saliva also inhibits the production of odor-causing compounds.
“¢ Chew on cinnamon gum, specifically. It has properties that are believed to help combat bad breath, in addition to increasing saliva production.
“¢ Drink water. This will also help wash away food particles and bacteria, while keeping you hydrated.
“¢ Eat citrus fruits. They act as a stimulant for the flow of saliva.
“¢ Chew on parsley or mint leaves.
“¢ Chew on sunflower or fennel seeds.
“¢ Try an herbal mouthwash. To make your own, mix together 2 tablespoons each of anise, cloves and peppermint, plus one tablespoon of cinnamon. Boil 3 cups of water; pour over mixture and cover. Let sit for 15 minutes; remove cover and let sit until cool. Strain. Store in fridge. Gargle with small amount of the mixture for one minute several times a day.
