Today was a crazy morning, and all I can say is it’s a miracle I got out of the house wearing deodorant, and something other than pajamas. As I was driving my kids to the YMCA, I made a face at myself in the rear-view mirror and said something about wishing I’d worn something other than what I had on (a green sweater that has seen better days). My 6 year-old said, “That wasn’t a very nice thing you just said to yourself, Mommy. You look beautiful! You are going to hurt your self’s feelings.”
It seriously took major will power for me to not leap into the backseat right there and then to hug and kiss her (I was, after all, driving!). And she’s SO right. We all need to be nicer to ourselves! I know I’m going to make an effort to keep any future self-bashing to myself (and to a minimum in general). Sometimes it’s easy to forget that our kids hear everything we say. I hope she can grow up to be as kind to HER self as she has been to mine.
