Elderberry for When You Feel “Eh”

I was on the elliptical at the gym this weekend, trying to just jam to my tunes (The Grateful Dead, if you must know), and the guy working out next to me was having a love affair with his sweat towel. He kept burying his face in it, talking to it–it was really weird. Then in between tracks I realized he had a horrible cold and had been blowing his nose the whole time! (So much for my wild imagination.) Our gym stacks the equipment so close together that he might as well have been blowing his nose right on me; of course this morning I woke up with the telltale soreness in my throat.

So I went straight for the elderberry.

If you haven’t heard of elderberry, it was just on TV last week. TV doc suggests taking it at the first sign of a cold. I’ve actually been a big believer in elderberry for quite a few years.

Every fall, I make my own elderberry elixir from a 16 oz. package of organic, dried whole elderberries, a few heaping tablespoons of raw honey and half a pint of brandy. (Put all of this in an airtight container like a mason jar and let it marinate for a few weeks before using.) But you can buy the (alcohol-free) elixir premade. You can also brew it as a tea or take lozenges. I just like to make my own because it tastes good!

Fortunately I did not end up getting sick (yet!), but can I make a request? If you have a terrible cold, could you could skip your workout or sweat it out at home? Sick Man With Sweat Towel, you know who you are!
