School may be out for summer, but it’s no time to veg out on the couch. Keep your kids busy this summer with these 5 healthy habits ““ and teach them to live well throughout the year!

Five Healthy Summer Habits for Kids

1.     Be Active: It is important for kids to remain active during the summer. Whether it be through a sports camp or program, a hike with the family or daily walks around the block, there are plenty of fun ways to exercise and stay active. Limit TV and video game time to prevent your kids from becoming summer couch potatoes.

2.     Eat Fresh: Summer is a great time to serve up fresh fruits and veggies at every meal. Keep plenty of crunchy veggies and sweet fruits on hand for quick and easy snacks and desserts. Make eating healthy a fun task by involving your children in the planning and preparation of dishes.

3.     Follow Bedtimes: While this may not exactly sound like fun to your little ones, it is important for kids to follow established bedtime routines, even in the summer. Getting enough sleep isn’t just for “school nights,” as growing children of all ages need consistently adequate sleep, usually between 9 and 10 hours per night.

4.     Engage the Brain: Academic challenge is important for developing minds. Keep that challenge going throughout the summer by encouraging your kids to read, play word games or tackle mind-bending puzzles. Add some fun and excitement by giving points for each task and offering prizes and rewards.

5.     Play with Dirt: Consider letting your kids get dirty ““ by starting your own backyard garden! Gardening can be a great way to teach your children about the importance of fruits and vegetables, as well as the responsibility of taking care of plants. Plus, they get to play in the dirt – everyone wins!
