Are you a slave to caffeine and sugar? Try these five surprising sources of energy instead, to keep your mind and body energized and ready to tackle the day’s tasks.

1. Breakfast: Need sustained fuel to last you until lunchtime? Start out with a balanced breakfast. What exactly does “balanced” mean? A balanced breakfast includes lean protein, carbohydrates (from whole grains) and at least one serving of fruits or veggies.

2. Sunshine: For a mood-lifting boost of energy, step out into the sun. Not only can sunshine help your body produce much-needed vitamin D, research has shown that simply being outdoors can support energy and vitality. However, if you plan to be outside for an extended period of time, be sure to take the necessary precautions to avoid sunburn.

3. Oxygen: If you’re looking for a quick energy fix, the answer is as simple as taking a breath.   Next time you find yourself yawning, try this simple breathing technique: inhale through your nose and slowly exhale through your mouth (your exhalation should be twice as long as the inhalation). Focusing on your breathing pattern can also help clear your mind and soothe occasional stress.

4. Exercise: The very thought of exercise may be enough to make you exhausted. But the truth is, regular exercise can have a positive impact on your body’s overall energy levels throughout the day and in the long term. Exercise encourages circulation and improves self-esteem, two factors that can contribute to both physical and mental alertness. For a double dose of energy, take a brisk walk in the sunshine during lunch.

5. Organization: Energize your day (and be more productive) by kicking clutter to the curb. An unorganized desk, room or office can lead to unnecessary stress, which drains your mind and body of valuable energy. Devote several minutes each day to cleaning up your workspace and keeping your projects and paperwork organized.
