Q: I’ve seen “fruit enzymes” and “alpha hydroxy acids” on the ingredient lists of some skincare products. Can you tell me what these are?

MyChelle Dermaceuticals licensed esthetician Catie Wiggy responds:

Everyone knows eating fruit is good for you””but what can it do for your skin? Fruit contains natural enzymes and compounds known as alpha hydroxy acids that are commonly used in skincare products.

While fruit enzymes are typically used to exfoliate (and are considered gentle enough for those with sensitive skin), alpha hydroxy acids are used to address hyperpigmentation (dark spots on skin), acne and other skin conditions. The activity and benefits of alpha hydroxy acids depends on the type used.

There are six forms of alpha hydroxy acids: glycolic acid, lactic acid, malic acid, tartic acid and citric acid. All can be sourced naturally. These compounds work to increase cellular turnover and enhance the overall health of skin. You will find lactic, malic, tartic and citric acids throughout the MyChelle line.

My pick for a super enzymatic treatment is the Fruit Fiesta Peel, it will renew a youthful glow and texture with its multi-fruit acids and 7% lactic acid content. In addition, alpha hydroxyl acids will smooth the look of wrinkles, leaving skin feeling refreshed and invigorated, with a light tingling sensation!
