This special time of year brings time with loved ones, a joyful atmosphere… and platters full of our favorite, indulgent (and often unhealthy) holiday dishes and treats. Making memories with friends and family is undoubtedly good for the soul, but sometimes the culinary temptations can be too much. So how can we enjoy the season while also maintaining our health and nutrition goals? Instead of skipping out on the festivities, be prepared with a plan to pile your plate (or your platter, if you’re the one hosting!) with better choices — check out these delicious, filling and surprisingly healthy options, approved by a registered dietitian:
Vegetables & Hummus:
This classic snack can be found at most parties and is a nutritious choice that will taste great and keep you satisfied. Fiber from vegetables is a great way to fill up without overdoing it on calories. Add a few dollops of hummus dip for some healthy fat, protein and great flavor to balance out this snack. Turkey Roll-ups:
A simple, filling and nutritious appetizer option packed with lean protein, these bite-sized roll-ups can be dressed up for the holidays. Choose a whole grain or vegetable-based wrap for additional fiber. If you’re hosting, consider adding fresh herbs, fruits or veggies for a flavorful and festive twist.
Mixed Nuts:
Another snacking item that can be found at any holiday party, nuts are a perfect combination of nutrients to keep you full. Nuts are packed with healthy, unsaturated, fat and protein which makes them very filling. Just be mindful of portions (ahem, don’t go nuts) – aim for about ¼ cup, an amount that would fit in the palm of your hand.
Cheese & Fruit:
A party is not complete without a cheese tray, and this can actually be part of a filling snack. One ounce of cheese is relatively low in calories and provides about 7 grams of protein. Pair cheese with a serving of fruit or a few whole grain crackers for some added fiber and a delicious, filling snack.
